GENERAL INFORMATION
The Denmark territory published their latest songbook in the year 2000. In preparing this, the songbook committee wanted to publish the lyrics ´Herre, gjør det stille i mitt indre´ (Lord, quieten my inner being) to Sir Andrew Lloyd Webber´s beautiful tune, which, originally, he composed for a song from the musical ´Jesus Christ Superstar´:
Look at all my trials and tribulations
Sinking in a gentle pool of wine
Don't disturb me now I can see the answers
Till this evening is this morning life is fine
Always hoped that I'd be an apostle
Knew that I would make it if I tried
Then when we retire we can write the gospels
So they'll still talk about us when we've died
However, when the Army asked Lloyd Webber for permission to use his music, he answered ´no´!
Around that time we had just moved to appointments at THQ in Denmark and as a definite ´second choice´, I was asked to write music to these lyrics that the committee so eagerly wanted to use in their new songbook. I readily accepted the challenge, not bothered in the slightest by being second choice, for let´s be honest, who can stand in the light of Lloyd Webber?
WHY AND WHAT
The author of the lyrics is unknown. However, when reading the beautiful and profound thoughts that are laid down in this prayer, it is clear the author must be someone with a deep spiritual life. In the last line, the poet says ´In you mercy I have more than enough´.
SONG INFORMATION
The song was originally meant for congregational singing, but lends itself also for choir use. The 4-part harmony is easy, but used in unison works well too.
Piano accompaniment is recommended, but if the singers manage their parts well, the song will be very effective without accompaniment.
A nice andante flow is advised, whilst making sure the song is not sung too fast.
